It has been a rough two outings for Team Yellow Bat. The past two Championships they have made it to the championship bracket, but could not put it all together in the finals. They finally were able to do so this time around at Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley. Team Yellow Bat, consisting of Terry Brands, Ben Berhow, Bobby Telford, Tony Ramos, and Matt Gurule, had an outstanding performance. They made it through the knockout rounds that consisted of nine teams and only four made the cut. They went into the championship bracket seeded third but the team knew they had the potential to win it all. Ramos said, "We just had to refocus and find our stride again. We did great in the first round of knockout games but the second was just a little off. We need to shut the doors on the competition and not even give them a chance."
And they went on to just that. In the championship round Bobby Telford lead the team to victory by bowling a 196, which was the high score of the night. Bobby had this to say, "We came focused and ready to go this year I just told the team once you find your groove just keep on plugin away and don't look back and that's what we did."
It took more than just Bobby's 196 to seal the victory. Matt Gurule put an exclamation point on the finals between Team Big Time and Team Yellow Bat. Gurule only need to pick up three more pins to seal it but he went out and did more than that. Gurule sat down and spoke with us afterwards and said, "I am glad I just had a second chance to prove to my team and myself that I just had a bad game earlier in the night."
Ben Berhow was a big part of helping Team Yellow Bat finally get it all together this year. They had one draft pick this year and he was the man who the rest of the team chose to join them. Berhow started strong and finished strong in their victory! "I was excited to be picked up by the team this year and help them finally get over the hump to win it all."
The past two tournaments the team has made the championship rounds but never been able to put it all together. The first time they ended up Third and the second Fourth. Terry Brands had this to say after the night was over, "We won it the Hawkeye way no trophies, no brackets, just pride."
Terry was referring to the past two years where the team who won got chocolate bunnies for 1st- 3rd place and the Champion got a bracket board, but this was not the case this time around due to uncontrollable circumstances. Second place belongs to Tom Brands, Jesse Donnenwerth, Jill Donnenwerth, Cory Clark, and Justin Wagner. To round out the field Third place was Ryan Morningstar, Brody Grothus, Jake Kadel, Thomas Gilman, and Skyler St. John. Tom Brands' team won the first Hawkeye Wrestling Bowling Champ and Ryan Morningstar's team won the Second.
What made this win so much more special though was Team Yellow Bat had won the Championship and allowed the second place to a rematch for a shot at the title, which has never been done before in the tournament history. They pulled it together for one more game and quieted all the critics. Terry Brands said it best before leaving the building, "We broke them all tonight. We took their pride."
