Hawkeye Wrestling Club member Tony Ramos went 4–1 in matches at the 2014 Freestyle World Clubs Cup, held Thursday-Friday, Nov. 27–28 in Iran. Ramos’ team, Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, advanced to the finals before falling to Bimeh Razi Joyubar, the hometown Iranian team that featured three World champions on its roster.
Ramos opened competition on Thursday with decisive victories over Ali Miras Kahled of the Arabian Army Club of Syria (10–0 tech fall), Reza Atri of Iran’s Manzandran club (pin), and Namik Sordomzada of Azerbaijan Gomzik Cho (3–2 decision). Ramos’ wins helped to propel TMWC to a 3–0 record in Pool B, qualifying it to wrestle in the semifinals on Friday against Union Wrestling Club of China.

In the semifinal against China, Ramos won a 7–2 decision over Qi Mu De. TMWC won all 8 matches to advance to the finals against Bimeh Razi Joyubar. The Iranian club prevailed 6 matches to 2 in the championship round. Ramos fell 9–0 to Hassan Rahimi.

Next up in HWC competition is Matt McDonough, who will wrestle Saturday, Nov. 29, at the 2014 Brazil Cup in Rio de Janeiro. Competition begins at 9 a.m. Rio time, which is four hours ahead of Iowa time. We’ll have results posted as soon as they are available.
